On the one hand refers to the "tonic" to the amount of solute in solution. Hypertonic solutions are resolved relative to another solution called hypotonic. When are two solutions to the tone of which is called isotonic one. Water is still trying to terminate a concentration gradient, and thus results from a zone to zone hypertonic hypotonic.
If the IV hypotonic, the cells of the body would be flooded, throwing the balance of pressure inside the cell.
If the IV is hypertonic, it would reduce the body's cells, thus its initial effectiveness.
IVs are isotonic, not because they alter the osmotic balance of body cells.
